Chapter 3
Snowy's High Perch
While Mary and Luna chat, Snowy, the curious cat, leaps onto the highest bookshelf! He surveys the room like a king. Mary wonders if he can see anything interesting from up there.
My tummy did a little flip-flop, the good kind, like when you’re about to go down a super-duper slide. Luna was here! And not just Luna, but Snowy and Starry too! My house suddenly felt twice as exciting. Luna’s long brown hair, the color of warm caramel, bounced as she stepped through the door, her bright blue eyes sparkling like the summer sky. Beside her, a flurry of white fur announced the arrival of Snowy, a sleek, elegant cat, and Starry, a tiny ball of fluff, his kittenish wiggles making him look like he was dancing.
“Come in, come in!” I practically shouted, my voice a little squeaky with happiness. “Welcome to my house!”
Luna giggled, a sound like tiny bells. “Thank you, Mary! They’re so excited to be here.” She gently nudged Starry, who was already trying to chase his own tail in the hallway. Snowy, meanwhile, was doing a slow, deliberate scan of the living room, his tail giving a little twitch as if he were taking mental notes.
We settled onto the comfy rug in the living room, Luna scooping up Starry into her arms for a cuddle. He purred like a tiny motor, burying his face in her neck. Snowy, however, was still on his tour of inspection. He padded silently from room to room, his senses on high alert. I watched him, a little thrill running through me. It was so cool to have actual pets in my house, even if they weren’t mine. I’d always wanted a pet, a little furry friend to share secrets with and play games. Maybe, just maybe, playing with Snowy and Starry would feel a little bit like having my own.
“So,” Luna began, her voice soft, “what do you want to do first?”
Before I could even think of an answer, a soft thud echoed from the living room. We both looked up. Snowy, with a grace that defied gravity, had leaped onto the very top of the tallest bookshelf. He was perched there, a regal white king surveying his new kingdom. His ears were perked, his tail gave a slow, deliberate swish, and his blue eyes, so like Luna’s, seemed to take in every single detail of the room.
“Wow!” I breathed, my eyes wide. “He’s so high up!”
Luna giggled again. “Snowy always likes to find the best vantage point. He thinks he’s a spy.”
Snowy blinked slowly, as if acknowledging her words. He looked so majestic, so completely at ease on his lofty perch. I wondered what he could see from up there. Could he spot any hidden treasures? Any secret passages? My imagination started to whir. Maybe from his high perch, Snowy could see things that we couldn't. Maybe he could see the best place to hide during a game of hide-and-seek, or maybe he could even see where lost toys went.
“He looks like a little cloud sitting on a mountain,” I said, a smile spreading across my face. “Do you think he can see anything interesting?”
Luna tilted her head, watching Snowy. “Probably. He’s very observant. He’s always the first one to know if there’s a treat being opened, even from another room.”
Starry, who had wriggled free from Luna’s embrace and was now batting playfully at a dust bunny, suddenly looked up, his ears twitching. He’d heard Snowy land, and now, with the determined focus only a kitten can possess, he was staring at the bookshelf. His little pink nose twitched.
“Oh no,” Luna said, a hint of worry in her voice. “Starry, don’t you even think about it.”
But Starry was already on the move. With a surprising burst of speed, he scrambled towards the bookshelf. He didn’t have Snowy’s graceful leaps. It was more of a frantic, scrabbling climb, his little claws finding purchase on the wooden shelves. He was determined to join his brother on the high perch.
“Starry, come here!” Luna called, her voice a little firmer.
Snowy, from his throne, let out a soft, warning meow. He clearly wasn’t thrilled about a climbing kitten invading his private kingdom. Starry, however, was too caught up in his mission to pay attention. He was halfway up now, his little body a white blur against the dark wood.
Suddenly, with a yowl of frustration, Starry missed a step and tumbled down, landing with a soft thump on the rug. He looked dazed for a moment, his blue eyes blinking rapidly. Snowy, from above, let out another meow, this one sounding almost sympathetic.
“Oh, Starry!” Luna rushed over, scooping up the little kitten. He nuzzled into her, purring again, as if the fall hadn’t happened. “You need to be more careful.”
I watched them, a pang of sympathy for Starry, but also a little bit of concern. What if he hurt himself? What if Snowy got upset? My secret wish for a pet felt a little bit complicated at that moment. Pets were cute and cuddly, but they could also be a little bit… wild.
“He’s okay,” Luna reassured me, stroking Starry’s soft fur. “He’s just a bit too excited. He’ll calm down.”
As she spoke, Starry wriggled free again, but this time, he didn't look at the bookshelf. His attention had been caught by something else. His little nose twitched, and his ears swivelled. He started to move, not towards Snowy, but towards the far corner of the living room, a place where the curtains hung heavy and dark.
“What’s he doing now?” I whispered.
Snowy, still observing from his high perch, let out a sort of rumbling purr. It sounded like he was amused.
Starry disappeared behind the thick velvet curtains. We heard a faint rustling sound, followed by a tiny, excited squeak.
“Starry?” Luna called, a little apprehensive.
We both got up and tiptoed towards the curtains. Peeking behind them, we saw Starry batting furiously at something hidden in the shadows. It was a small, grey mouse, a toy mouse, with long whiskers and bright beady eyes. It looked a little dusty, like it had been lost for a while.
“Oh!” Luna exclaimed. “That’s his favorite toy! He must have dropped it when we came in, and it rolled behind there.”
Starry pounced, grabbing the mouse in his mouth and shaking it triumphantly. He looked so proud, so happy.
Then, something even more surprising happened. Snowy, with a fluid movement, leaped down from the bookshelf, landing silently on the rug. He didn’t go to Starry, though. Instead, he padded over to a small, decorative box on a low table. He sniffed at it, then nudged it with his nose. A faint clinking sound came from inside.
“What’s he doing?” I asked, my curiosity piqued again.
Snowy nudged the box again, and this time, a little bell, no bigger than my thumbnail, rolled out. It was a tiny silver bell, and it tinkled merrily as it spun on the rug.
Luna gasped. “That’s… that’s my old music box! I haven’t seen that in ages! It has a little ballerina inside.” She carefully opened the box, and sure enough, a tiny, delicate ballerina stood poised inside. When she wound it up, a sweet, tinkling melody filled the air.
Snowy watched the music box with intelligent eyes, his tail giving a satisfied flick. He then looked over at Starry, who was still happily wrestling with his toy mouse. It was as if Snowy had been waiting for the right moment to reveal the hidden treasure.
“Wow,” I whispered, my eyes wide. “Snowy found the music box! And Starry found his favorite mouse!”
Luna smiled, a warm, happy smile. “It looks like they both have their own special talents. Snowy’s the great explorer, and Starry’s the master of finding lost treasures.” She looked at me, her blue eyes shining. “And maybe,” she added softly, “they were waiting for us to help them find them.”
A wave of warmth washed over me. It was true. We hadn’t just found lost toys; we had worked together, Mary and Luna, with Snowy and Starry, to bring a little bit of magic back into the room. Starry was now happily batting his mouse around, and Snowy was curled up by the music box, his eyes half-closed, listening to the sweet melody. The chaotic energy of their arrival had melted away, replaced by a peaceful, contented hum.
Luna scooped up Starry, and I gently stroked Snowy’s soft fur. He purred, a deep, rumbling sound that vibrated through my fingertips. It was a sound of pure happiness. My secret wish for a pet felt a little less like a secret now, and a little more like a possibility. Maybe, just maybe, someday.
“This is going to be the best visit ever,” I said, my voice full of a happy certainty.
Luna smiled, her gaze meeting mine. “It already is,” she said, and I knew, with all my heart, that she was right. The adventure of Mary and Luna, and their furry companions, had just begun.
