Chapter 5
Chapter Five — Freeing the Past
Jenny’s fingers drifted back to the hem of her shirt, tracing the stubborn edge that refused to stay down. “I’ve always felt strange about my body,” she admitted. “Even when I was little. Changing for gym, wearing tight clothes… I hated it. I hated being seen.” Her voice faltered. “This makes me feel exposed. Like everything I worked so hard to keep hidden is just… out there.” Tears spilled over again. “And experiencing the Shirt Phenomenon,” she whispered, “it feels like being forced into that vulnerability. I don’t know how to handle it.” She collapsed into Robin’s arms, her sobs muffled now, uneven and exhausted.
Robin wrapped her tightly, one hand cradling the back of her head, the other steady against her back. For a long moment, no one spoke. The room held them in gentle spring light and the faint hum of country music drifting from the stereo. Robin kissed the top of Jenny’s head. “Oh, sweetheart,” she murmured, her voice thick with tenderness. “You’ve been carrying that fear for a very long time, haven’t you?”
