Chapter 9
The Wooden Sphere's Purpose
The small wooden spheres, initially dismissed as trinkets, are revealed to be part of a specific smuggling method or a unique form of communication. Their true purpose adds to the complexity of the operation.
The tiny wooden spheres lay scattered across Anya’s kitchen table, innocuous and smooth beneath her fingertips. She’d turned them over and over, searching for a seam, a hidden button, anything that might suggest they were more than mere decorative curiosities. They were small, no bigger than a robin’s egg, and carved with an almost unsettling precision. Anya had almost dismissed them entirely, another oddity in a package that already defied logic. But Viktor’s words, even in their cryptic brevity, kept circling back: "Every piece has a purpose, Anya. Especially the ones that seem the most out of place."
She picked one up, its weight surprisingly substantial for its size. It felt smooth, almost silken, and a faint, sweet scent, like dried flowers and old wood, clung to it. She’d tried tapping them, shaking them, even gently pressing them against the hard surface of the table. Nothing. They simply were. Yet, they were part of the same consignment as the memory card that had unlocked a digital Pandora’s Box and the blood pressure monitor that had whispered secrets of its own.
“Purpose,” Anya murmured, the word tasting foreign on her tongue. She imagined them rolling, perhaps, down a chute, or being used as counterweights, or even… she paused, a shiver tracing its way down her spine, as she remembered Viktor’s grim tales of how certain goods were sometimes disguised, their true nature hidden within seemingly innocent objects. But these? They were too simple, too unadorned.
