The blood pressure monitor sat on Anya’s kitchen table, an unassuming white and grey contraption that seemed utterly out of place amongst the scattered wooden spheres and the glinting memory card. She’d spent hours poring over the latter, her mind a whirlwind of numbers, letters, and cryptic phrases that danced just beyond her grasp. The spheres, too, had yielded little; smooth and polished, they felt like ordinary decorative items, perhaps a clumsy attempt at a gift or a distraction. But the monitor… that felt different. It hummed with a quiet, clinical purpose, a stark contrast to the abstract puzzle she was trying to solve.

She picked it up, her fingers tracing the cool plastic casing. It was a standard digital device, the kind her grandmother used. She remembered her buying one a few years back, a little worried about her ticker. Anya had even helped her set it up, showing her how to wrap the cuff around her arm and press the start button. This one, however, was brand new, still nestled in its original packaging, the plastic film peeled back as if in a hurry. She’d tried it on herself, a futile gesture to understand its function, but the readings had been normal, unremarkable. Yet, something nagged at her. The sheer randomness of it, paired with the other items, felt like a deliberate choice, not an accident.

Anya sighed, running a hand through her hair. She was beginning to feel like a detective in one of those old noir films, except her trench coat was a worn-out cardigan and her smoky office was a brightly lit kitchen smelling faintly of yesterday’s coffee. She turned the monitor over, examining the battery compartment. Standard AA batteries, nothing unusual there. She pressed the power button again, just to see the familiar display light up. It blinked, showing ‘000’, then settled into its standby mode. She tapped the screen, then the buttons, her mind a jumble of thoughts. What if it wasn’t about measuring blood pressure? What if it was about transmitting something? The memory card was a digital key, but what if this was a physical one?
