Chapter 4
Echoes from a Past Life
Anya's research leads her to Viktor Volkov, a former associate of the smuggling ring. He's cynical and wary, but Anya's determination and the gravity of the situation convince him to cautiously share his knowledge.
Anya traced the worn edges of the photograph, the paper soft and yielding beneath her fingertips. It depicted a younger Viktor, his eyes sharp and almost too knowing, a faint scar bisecting his left eyebrow. The image, discovered tucked away in a forgotten drawer in her grandmother’s old desk, felt like a key, a tangible link to the shadowy figure who had agreed to meet her. She’d found it while searching for anything that might explain the peculiar circumstances of Viktor’s past, the fragmented hints of his involvement with the very network she was trying to expose. The address he’d given her was scrawled on a crumpled napkin, the ink faded but legible: a small cafe on the outskirts of Kaunas, a place far from the bustling city center, a place that felt deliberately nondescript.
The air inside the cafe was thick with the aroma of dark roast coffee and the low hum of hushed conversations. Anya sat by the window, a half-empty cup of tea growing cold beside her, her gaze sweeping over the few patrons scattered at tables. Most were elderly, their faces etched with the quiet contemplation of a life lived, their conversations soft murmurs. Then, the door creaked open, and a man stepped in, his presence immediately altering the cafe’s atmosphere. He was lean, dressed in dark, practical clothing that seemed to absorb the light. His hair was streaked with grey, pulled back from a face that had seen its share of harsh winds and harder decisions. He moved with a quiet economy of motion, his eyes, a startlingly pale blue, scanning the room with a practiced efficiency. Anya recognized him instantly from the photograph, though the lines on his face were deeper now, the cynicism in his gaze more pronounced. He was Viktor.
He approached her table, his steps deliberate, his expression unreadable. He didn’t offer a smile, nor did he flinch at her presence. He simply stopped, his gaze settling on her with an intensity that made Anya’s breath catch. "Anya Petrova?" he asked, his voice a low rumble, tinged with a distinct weariness.
