The flickering lamplight cast long, dancing shadows across Anya’s small apartment, turning familiar corners into places of mystery. The memory card lay nestled on her desk, a tiny, innocuous object that had become the key to a world she never knew existed. Beside it, the wooden spheres, once just oddities, now felt like weighty secrets, each one a silent sentinel in the grand, illicit tapestry they were slowly unravelling. Viktor, his face etched with a weariness that seemed to go bone-deep, leaned over the scattered papers, his fingers tracing the lines of a crudely drawn map.

“The informant was right about the coastal routes,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble. “They use the fishing trawlers, disguised as legitimate cargo. Small hauls, frequent trips. Harder to track, especially when they’ve got eyes everywhere.”

Anya nodded, her own gaze fixed on a series of numbers and letters scrawled in the margin of one of Viktor’s notebooks. “And the inland routes? The ones through Poland and Belarus?”
