The air in the small, dimly lit cafe hung heavy with the scent of stale coffee and unspoken anxieties. Rain, a persistent drizzle that seemed to have become Lithuania’s permanent soundtrack, slicked the cobblestone streets outside, blurring the neon glow of a distant sign. Anya clutched her worn handbag a little tighter, her gaze fixed on the entrance. Viktor sat opposite her, a study in controlled impatience, his fingers drumming a silent rhythm on the scarred tabletop. He’d insisted on this meeting, a final confirmation before they pushed further, and Anya knew his instincts were usually as sharp as the glint in his eyes.

The door creaked open, admitting a gust of damp air and a figure that seemed to shrink into the shadows. It was a man, his shoulders hunched against an invisible weight, his eyes darting nervously around the nearly empty room. He was neither young nor old, his face a landscape of weary lines, and he moved with a peculiar, almost furtive grace, as if accustomed to navigating unseen. Anya recognized him from Viktor’s brief, hushed description: the informant.

He approached their table tentatively, his gaze skittering between Anya and Viktor. Viktor offered a curt nod, a gesture that held more gravity than a handshake. "You're late," Viktor said, his voice low, not unkindly, but with an edge that conveyed the stakes.
