The air in Anya’s studio hummed with an energy that was both intoxicating and unsettling. Sunlight streamed through the large windows, catching dust motes dancing in the shafts of light, but beneath the surface sparkle, a chill had begun to creep in. Anya, usually so radiant, felt a prickle of unease bloom in her chest. Her light magic, the very essence of her being, felt… muted, as if a thin veil had been drawn across its brilliance.
“Are you feeling it too?” she asked, her voice a soft whisper, not wanting to break the fragile peace of the moment. Her eyes, usually alight with warmth, held a flicker of apprehension.
Luna, leaning against a velvet-draped mannequin, her dark eyes sharp and observant, nodded slowly. Her fingers, usually so adept at weaving illusions, were still. “Something is wrong, Anya. It’s like a shadow stretching, trying to find purchase.” She hugged her arms around herself, a familiar gesture of self-protection. The unease was a scent on the wind to her, something she’d learned to recognize, and it always brought with it the echoes of past hurts.
