Descent into Level 1
Following Kai's lead, the group ventures into a new level. It's darker, colder, and the 'tests' become more apparent, with environmental hazards and psychological manipulation.
The air grew heavy, thick with a chill that gnawed at Alex’s exposed skin. The familiar hum of Level 0, once a constant companion, thinned, replaced by a low, guttural thrum that seemed to vibrate not just through the carpet but through bone and sinew. Kai, ever the eager explorer, practically vibrated with anticipation, his flashlight beam dancing ahead, a frantic beacon in the encroaching gloom.
“This is it,” he breathed, his voice a hushed reverence. “Level 1. I can feel it.”
Alex shivered, pulling their thin jacket tighter. The transition had been subtle, almost a non-event. One moment, they were navigating a particularly long, featureless corridor of Level 0, the next, the walls had bled from a sickly yellow to a bruised, oppressive grey. The carpet, still damp and stained, was now a matted, dark brown, and the fluorescent lights overhead, fewer and farther between, flickered with a menacing irregularity. The scent of mildew was stronger here, laced with something metallic, like old blood.
