The transition was smoother this time, a mere ripple in the oppressive monotony of yellow. One moment, Alex was tracing the faint, almost imperceptible shimmer that marked the edge of their current corridor, the next, the familiar hum of the fluorescent lights seemed to recede, replaced by a profound, unnerving silence. The damp carpet underfoot gave way to a smooth, cool surface that felt like polished stone, and the walls, once a sickly expanse of patterned wallpaper, now receded into an impossible, vaulted darkness.

“Where…?” Maya’s voice was barely a whisper, a fragile thing in the sudden quiet.

Alex blinked, their eyes adjusting to the dimness. They were in a vast chamber, its scale dwarfed only by the sheer, dizzying height of its ceiling, lost somewhere in the gloom above. Rows upon rows of shelves stretched into the distance, forming aisles that disappeared into an inky blackness. These weren’t shelves of metal or cheap particleboard, but dark, richly veined wood, intricately carved with patterns that Alex couldn’t quite decipher – they seemed to shift and writhe just at the edge of their vision. And on these shelves… books. Thousands, millions, an uncountable legion of them, bound in leather of every conceivable shade, their spines silent, their pages unread.
