Kai’s words hung in the stale air, heavy and charged. “It’s not just random. It’s a system. A sorting.” He paced the familiar yellow expanse, his movements agitated, a stark contrast to the usual stoic stillness that settled over them in these endless corridors. Alex watched him, a knot of unease tightening in their chest. Kai’s earlier talk of a ‘vision’ had been dismissed by Maya as a stress-induced hallucination, a desperate attempt to impose order on chaos. But Alex, with their own quiet tendency to dissect every anomaly, had felt a flicker of something in Kai’s conviction. Now, watching him, that flicker was growing into a steady burn.

“A sorting for what, Kai?” Maya’s voice was soft but firm, her gaze fixed on the damp, stained carpet as if searching for answers in its decaying patterns. She was cleaning a patch with a damp cloth, a futile, almost ritualistic act of domesticity in this alien landscape.

“For… for us,” Kai said, stopping abruptly. He turned, his eyes wide and intense. “Think about it. The way some hallways feel… heavier. The rooms that seem to pulse with a different kind of energy. The sounds that aren’t just echoes, but… cues. It’s like a maze, but the walls are designed to make you think, to make you react, to see what you’re made of.”
