The hum of the fluorescent lights seemed to press in on Maya, a physical weight against her temples. She’d been quiet for days, a stillness that had settled over her like the perpetual dampness of the carpet. Alex watched her, a knot of concern tightening in their chest. Maya, usually the steady anchor, the one who could find a flicker of hope in the endless yellow, had become a silhouette of her former self. Her eyes, once bright with resilience, now held a deep, unfathomable sadness.

They were huddled in a corner of what passed for a common room – a slightly larger space than the usual corridors, furnished only by the oppressive uniformity of the walls. Kai was tracing patterns on the floor with a piece of loose thread, his usual restless energy subdued. Silas, predictably, was off somewhere with his own silent, watchful followers, his presence a constant, low-level thrum of antagonism.

"Maya?" Alex began, their voice soft, tentative. "Are you okay?"
