Chapter 6
A Love Rekindled
The scent of aged paper and dried lavender clung to Eleanor like a second skin, a comforting perfume in the quietude of her small apartment. Books were her sanctuary, their pages a refuge from the gnawing emptiness where her memories should have been. The doorbell chimed, a sharp, insistent sound that cut through the afternoon hush. It was an unusual occurrence. Visitors were rare, unexpected intrusions into her carefully guarded solitude. Her heart gave a peculiar flutter, a mix of apprehension and a strange, nascent curiosity. Who could it be? She smoothed her apron, a nervous gesture, and walked to the door.
