The scent of old paper and dried lavender was Eleanor’s sanctuary. Her small apartment, a haven from a world she felt perpetually adrift in, was meticulously ordered, each object placed with deliberate care. It was a quiet life, a life built on the precarious foundation of forgetting. The gnawing ache of lost memories was a constant companion, a silent hum beneath the surface of her days. Her only anchor, the only tangible link to a woman she couldn't quite grasp, were the earrings. They rested on a velvet cushion on her dresser, twin stars catching the lamplight, their facets scattering tiny rainbows across the polished wood. She’d touch them sometimes, tracing their cool, intricate settings, a phantom warmth blooming in her chest, a feeling she couldn't name. A stranger’s gift, she’d always told herself, a fleeting encounter in a life that felt like a series of disconnected moments.
The chime of the doorbell, a sound so rare it always startled her, cut through the stillness. Eleanor frowned, a prickle of unease threading through her. She wasn't expecting anyone. Hesitantly, she peered through the peephole. A figure stood on her doorstep, cloaked and hooded, their face obscured by shadows. A delivery, perhaps? But the hushed urgency radiating from the visitor felt different. She opened the door a crack, her hand instinctively reaching for the comforting weight of the earrings she always wore.
"Yes?" her voice was soft, a little breathless.
