The air in the house hung thick with the ghosts of shattered plaster and the acrid tang of desperation. Each sunrise felt less like a promise and more like a countdown to another cascade of cracks. We’d chased the light, or rather, the illusion of it, for weeks. The custom LEDs, meant to pulse with the gentle rhythm of a bioluminescent deep sea, stubbornly flickered like dying stars. Katerina, her hands perpetually dusted with a fine white powder, would adjust a wire, then sigh, a sound that echoed the weariness in my own bones. Lexi, ever the optimist, would try a new configuration, her brow furrowed in concentration, only to be met with the same sullen, inadequate glow. George, our anchor to reality, would stand back, arms crossed, a silent, worried sentinel. He’d seen me pour my soul into this place, seen me drag a bewildered but willing crew through the wreckage of my ordinary life, and I knew he was questioning, not the dream itself, but my ability to navigate its treacherous currents.

“It’s just… not right,” Lexi murmured, her voice barely audible above the hum of the struggling LEDs. She traced a damp line on the wall where a particularly stubborn crack had reappeared, a dark vein marring the nascent smoothness of a mermaid’s tail. “It’s supposed to be alive, Nikoleta. Like the ocean breathes. This just feels… sick.”

Sick. The word lodged itself in my chest, a sharp shard of truth. We’d started with such fervent belief, a collective leap of faith into the unknown. The initial demolition had been exhilarating, a cathartic unburdening of the past. But then came the sculpting. The mermaids, meant to writhe with an ethereal grace, had contorted into monstrous parodies as the plaster dried too fast, too brittle, too unforgiving. The ancient columns, intended to stand as stoic testaments to a lost civilization, crumbled at a touch, their supposed grandeur reduced to pathetic piles of dust. Each failure was a tiny death, each crack a fresh wound.
