Chasing Bioluminescence

The air in the house, once thick with the scent of old plaster and forgotten lives, now hummed with a different kind of energy. It was the low thrum of electricity, the frantic whisper of wires, and the desperate hope that somewhere within this tangled mess, magic would ignite. We were chasing bioluminescence, or at least, our amateur approximation of it. The idea had been Nikoleta’s, of course. A house that didn't just *look* like an underwater kingdom, but *felt* like one. And what was an underwater kingdom without the ethereal glow of its inhabitants? Jellyfish, she’d declared, their pulsing light woven into the very fabric of the walls.

The reality, however, was less ethereal and more… frustratingly inert. We’d spent days wrestling with lengths of LED strip, delicate strands of copper, and a bewildering array of connectors that seemed designed by a sadist. Lexi, bless her patient soul, was our designated electrician, a title she’d earned through sheer willingness to poke and prod at things that sparked. George, ever the pragmatist, hovered nearby, his brow furrowed, muttering about voltage drops and short circuits as if he’d spent his life servicing deep-sea submersibles. Katerina, her hands perpetually stained with plaster dust, would occasionally pause her sculpting of a particularly defiant mermaid’s tail to offer a word of encouragement or a shared sigh of exasperation.

“It’s just… not glowing,” Lexi announced, her voice barely audible above the hum of the dehumidifier working overtime. She held up a section of wall where a cluster of translucent, sculpted shapes were meant to mimic jellyfish. They looked beautiful in the dim light, like ghostly specters caught in mid-drift, but they were resolutely, stubbornly dark.
