The Pebble Diversion

Barnaby gathers the shiniest pebbles he can find. Pip bravely helps scatter them, creating a glittering path away from their route. Bartholomew, distracted by the sparkle, follows the pebbles, allowing them to sneak past.

Barnaby’s big green eyes scanned the forest floor, not for the path ahead, but for something far more important. The map, clutched carefully in his paws, showed a winding trail that led right past Bartholomew’s den. And Bartholomew, as they all knew, was a badger of immense grumbles and a fierce protectiveness over his patch of earth. Barnaby shivered, a tiny tremor running through his wagging tail. He didn’t like making Bartholomew angry. “Pip,” he whispered, his voice barely a rustle of leaves, “we need a diversion. A big one.”

Pip, ever ready for a bit of mischief, twitched her whiskers. “A diversion? Like what? A giant squeaky toy? A trail of particularly tasty-smelling mushrooms?” Her tail flicked with excitement, a question mark in motion.

Barnaby shook his head, his floppy red bow tie bobbing. “No, Pip. Something Bartholomew can’t resist. Something… sparkly.” He nudged a small, smooth stone with his nose. It gleamed faintly in the dappled sunlight. “These!”
