Chapter 5
A Badger's Grumble
The badger, Barnaby and Pip learn, is named Bartholomew. He complains about being disturbed. Pip tries to distract him with a playful chase, while Barnaby observes Bartholomew's habits, looking for a weakness.
Barnaby’s tail gave a small, hopeful wag as Pip, with a flick of her tail, pointed a tiny paw towards the badger’s burrow. “He’s still grumbling, Barnaby! “He sounds very cross,” Barnaby replied, his own voice a soft rumble in his chest. He remembered the grumpy badger’s gruff warning from earlier, the one that had sent them scrambling back. “He said something about ‘peace’ and ‘trespassers’.”
Pip, ever the adventurer, bounced on her paws. “Maybe he just needs a friend! Or maybe he’s just hungry and needs a good game of chase!” She took a step forward, her playful spirit bubbling over.
