Chapter 4
The Acorn Trail
Squeaky needs to find her mother. Joe, guided by Lee and Squeaky's faint scent, leads them through the dense woods. They follow a winding path, hoping to find the other confused squirrel before nightfall.
The little squirrel, Squeaky, nestled in the crook of my arm, her tiny claws tickling my shirt. Lee, perched on my shoulder, chirped encouragement, his bright eyes darting between Squeaky and the path ahead. "Don't worry, little one," I murmured, stroking her soft fur. "We'll find your Mama. Lee’s got a good nose for this sort of thing."

It was a sweet sight, the unlikely friendship blossoming between the bird and the squirrel.
But the woods, as beautiful as they were, could also be a bewildering maze. The trees stood tall and close, their branches weaving a thick canopy that dappled the sunlight into shifting patterns on the forest floor. The scent of pine and damp earth was strong, but Squeaky’s trail was faint, a whisper on the breeze that only Lee seemed to pick up with any certainty.
