The storm had raged with a ferocity that felt personal, a wild, untamed beast determined to reshape the world. When the sky finally softened, weeping gentle tears instead of unleashing its fury, Nia emerged from her shelter, blinking against the watery sunlight. The familiar path that had snaked up the mountainside, a ribbon of worn earth she knew as well as the back of her hand, was gone. In its place was a chaotic tapestry of uprooted trees, scattered boulders, and a churning, brown river where a gentle stream had once chuckled.
A knot tightened in Nia’s stomach. The summit, her gleaming, impossible dream, suddenly felt even further away, shrouded in a mist of doubt. She took a tentative step forward, her boots sinking into the sodden earth. The air was thick with the scent of damp soil and bruised leaves. The forest, usually a symphony of chirps and rustles, was eerily silent, as if holding its breath.
“Nia, be careful!” her father’s voice called out, laced with concern. He and her mother were close behind, their faces etched with worry, but their eyes held a steady warmth that always anchored her.
