The air in my small study felt thick, charged with an unspoken energy that had become my constant companion since the arrival of the deck. It was late, the kind of late where the world outside had settled into a hushed slumber, leaving only the soft glow of my desk lamp and the hushed rustle of cardstock. I’d been shuffling, a mindless, almost desperate ritual, the worn edges of the cards a familiar comfort against my fingertips. The Tower, that persistent, unsettling sentinel, had appeared again in my last few attempts, a jagged shard of disruption that I still couldn’t quite reconcile with my burgeoning understanding. It felt like a warning, a threat, a disruption I wasn’t ready for, and its shadow loomed large.
I’d spread the cards out on the worn velvet cloth, not for a specific reading, but simply to be among them, to let their silent dialogues wash over me. The Fool, a wide-eyed wanderer stepping off a precipice, still radiated a naive optimism that I both envied and feared. The High Priestess, serene and knowing, held her secrets close, her veil an impenetrable mystery. And there, in the corner, The Tower, its lightning-riven silhouette a stark reminder of impending upheaval. I traced its jagged lines with a hesitant finger, a tremor running through me. What was it trying to tell me? What structure in my life was so fragile, so ready to crumble?
My friend, Chloe, had called earlier, her voice a bright, practical counterpoint to the shadows that often gathered in my mind. "Still communing with your spooky cards?" she'd asked, her tone laced with her usual gentle skepticism. "Anything exciting happen in the land of omens?"
