The air in my small living room felt different now, less charged with the static of the unknown and more humming with a gentle, resonant frequency. It was the sound of my own intuition, finally beginning to find its voice, a melody that had been there all along, just waiting for me to listen. The worn velvet of the card cloth, once a shroud for secrets, now felt like a familiar stage, ready for a new act. I had been practicing, diligently, on my own, tracing the lines of the Hermit’s lamp in the quiet hours, feeling the weight of the Empress’s fertile hands. The cards, once aloof arbiters of destiny, were slowly, tentatively, becoming confidantes.
But the true test, I knew, lay beyond the solitary confines of my own mind. The real magic, the art of cartomancy, was in its ability to mirror the lives of others, to offer a flicker of light in the shadows of their own uncertainties. And so, I invited Maya.
Maya, my bedrock of pragmatism, my constant reminder of the tangible world. She arrived with her usual bright energy, a whirlwind of practical concerns and wry observations. “So,” she’d said, her eyes scanning the room, a faint smile playing on her lips, “you’re still talking to your fancy playing cards?”
