The air in the supply closet was thick with the smell of forgotten gym socks and dust bunnies the size of small rodents. Seriously, I think I saw one of them wink at me. Maya, of course, was already pacing a frantic, tiny circle, her energy usually so vibrant now bottled up and fizzing like a shaken soda. “This is all your fault, Leo!” she declared, her voice echoing off the shelves crammed with deflated basketballs and suspiciously sticky art supplies. “If you hadn’t been so busy practicing your ridiculous ‘Vanishing Act’ and instead paid attention to where you were going, we wouldn’t be in this musty tomb!”

I leaned against a stack of old textbooks, trying to look as unbothered as possible, which, let’s be honest, was about as convincing as a mime trying to hide a tuba. “My act is not ridiculous, Maya. It’s *mystical*. And *you* were the one practically pirouetting into me like a runaway ballerina. Perhaps you should stick to the stage where you belong, not the backstage chaos where you clearly can’t handle yourself.”

She stopped pacing, hands on her hips, glaring daggers that I’m pretty sure could have chipped paint off the walls. “Oh, I can’t handle myself? I’m the one who’s usually gliding across the stage, not tripping over my own feet trying to make a handkerchief disappear.”
