Chapter 7

Turning Setbacks into Growth: Reframing Challenges

A major project at work goes sideways when Brad's presentation crashes mid-slide. The inner critic roars: "See? You can't do anything." But Brad pauses, takes a breath, and whispers: "How can I fix this?" They improvise, switch to handouts, and finish the presentation. Afterwards, a coworker compliments their composure. Brad feels a quiet pride. Emily later explains reframing: challenges are not threats, they are opportunities to learn. Brad practices shifting language from "I can't" to "I will try," from "This is a disaster" to "This is a puzzle." They focus on solutions and strengths, listing three things they did well today. The chapter closes with Brad writing in their journal: "The inner critic is not a prophet; it's a worried friend with bad communication skills." Growth feels possible.
