Chapter 4

Watching Your Thoughts: Mindfulness and Journaling

Brad sits on their apartment floor, eyes closed, trying to meditate. The inner critic immediately screams: "You're doing it wrong." But Emily's instruction echoes: observe without judgment, let thoughts pass like clouds. Brad's mind keeps wandering, and each time they gently return to their breath. Later, they open the notebook and write down every negative thought from the day: "I'm boring," "I'll never get promoted," "Danny is tired of me." Seeing them on paper feels strange—these thoughts look flimsy outside their head. Brad begins to notice patterns: the critic is loudest before sleep and after social interactions. This self-awareness is uncomfortable but also liberating. By the end of the chapter, Brad realizes that watching a thought is not the same as being it. The inner critic's spell weakens.

I could picture it standing in the corner of my mind, arms crossed, shaking its head with the weary disappointment of a theater critic watching a community production of Death of a Salesman.
