Sunlight streamed through the tall, arched windows, illuminating dust motes dancing like tiny ballerinas in the shafts of light. It was the same space Rein had once filled with dreams sketched onto crisp paper, the same space that had witnessed her soaring hopes and the subsequent, crushing descent. But today, it felt… lighter. Brighter.
Valerie stood by the large drafting table, not with her usual imposing stillness, but with a quiet contemplation. Her dark hair was pulled back in a sleek ponytail, a stark contrast to the softer, looser styles Rein had seen her wear in fleeting, unguarded moments. Rein watched her from the doorway, a knot of nervous anticipation tightening in her chest. It had been weeks since Valerie’s unexpected apology, weeks since that starlit confession had hung in the air between them, a fragile promise. And now, this.
“It’s been a while,” Valerie said, her voice softer than Rein remembered, lacking the sharp edges that had once defined it. She gestured to the empty space around them. “I confess, I wasn’t sure if you’d agree to this.”
