Pip – or rather, the person formerly known as Pip, the perpetually flustered, perpetually spilling-something Pip – sat back in their chair, a faint, almost smug, smile playing on their lips. The diary lay open on the desk, pages filled with a glorious, chaotic tapestry of their life. It wasn’t the pristine, organized journal they’d initially envisioned, the kind that whispered of quiet contemplation and profound insights. Oh no. This diary was a testament to spilled coffee, ink blots that resembled particularly grumpy badgers, and prose that veered wildly between poetic musings and frantic, all-caps confessions of doom.
It had started, as most things in Pip’s life did, with a whim. A fleeting thought that perhaps, just perhaps, they could impose some semblance of order on the delightful pandemonium that was their existence. Agnes, ever the beacon of pragmatism, had raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow when Pip had announced their intention to chronicle their days. “A diary, Pip? You? Are you sure you won’t just end up writing about that time you tried to make sourdough and accidentally created a small, sentient blob that ate your favourite spatula?”
Pip had waved a dismissive hand, already picturing the elegant script, the neatly dated entries, the introspective paragraphs. “This time will be different, Agnes. This time, I will be… profound.” Agnes had simply hummed, a sound that conveyed a universe of gentle skepticism.
