The initial entries in Pip’s diary were, to put it mildly, a chore. It felt like homework, a mandatory assignment for a course Pip hadn’t signed up for and frankly, didn’t want to pass. Each morning, the blank page loomed, a silent accuser of Pip’s inherently disorganized existence. The very act of putting pen to paper felt like an attempt to impose order on a life that reveled in glorious, unadulterated chaos. It was like trying to herd butterflies into a shoebox.

“Dear Diary,” Pip had scrawled on the first page, the ink bleeding slightly from an overzealous press of the pen, “Today I attempted to make toast. The result was… smoky. And slightly singed. I have decided toast is a conspiracy by the bread industry. Also, I misplaced my left sock. Again. This is going to be harder than I thought.”

Agnes, Pip’s best friend and resident voice of reason (a role Pip found both irritating and strangely comforting), had raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow when Pip first unveiled the brand-new, leather-bound journal. “A diary, Pip? Really? I thought your life was spontaneous combustion, not structured reflection.”
