The afternoon sun, usually a warm, comforting embrace across Kwathema’s dusty streets, felt strangely muted today. Zandile sat by her window, the worn lace curtains framing a world that suddenly seemed less vibrant, less certain. A crumpled photograph lay on the sill, its edges softened with time, depicting a younger Thabo, his smile wide and carefree, beside a woman Zandile had never seen. The woman’s arm was linked intimately with his, her head resting on his shoulder. It was a stark contrast to the shy, respectful glances Zandile had grown accustomed to, a stark contrast to the man she believed she was falling in love with.

“It’s just a picture, Zandi,” she whispered to herself, trying to inject a note of conviction into her voice. But the image refused to fade, the woman’s eyes, bright and seemingly full of affection, staring back at her. Doubt, a venomous serpent, began to coil in her stomach. Was this a prank? A cruel joke by someone who wished them ill? Or was it the truth, a truth Thabo had deliberately kept from her?
