A Test of Courage

The air in the Apennines crackled with a tension as sharp as the mountain wind. Luca, his fur bristling, felt it deep in his bones. It wasn't just the chill of the approaching dusk, nor the gnawing emptiness in his belly. It was the scent of other wolves, strong and unwelcome, drifting on the breeze from the north. Marco’s scent.
He was no longer entirely alone. Elara, her fur the color of twilight, moved beside him, her eyes, like polished obsidian, scanning the rugged landscape. Rocco, a mountain of muscle and wary suspicion, trotted a few paces behind, his powerful shoulders a constant reminder of his strength, and his distrust. They were an unlikely trio, drawn together by circumstance and Luca’s hesitant courage. Now, that courage was about to be tested.
"They are close," Elara murmured, her voice a low rumble. "Marco’s pack. They are hunting."
