A Gathering of Strays
Luca encounters Elara and Rocco, wolves from disparate groups. Despite their initial caution and differences, they are drawn to Luca's quiet strength.
The scent of pine and damp earth filled Luca’s lungs, a familiar comfort in the vast emptiness of the Apennines. He was a creature of solitude, his days a rhythmic dance of hunting, exploring, and listening to the ancient whispers of the mountains. Yet, a persistent hum, a subtle discord in the symphony of his existence, had been growing louder. It drew him, not with a sharp command, but with a soft, persistent tug, towards the shadowed clefts and hidden valleys that even he, in his solitary wanderings, had yet to fully explore. Today, that tug was a siren’s call, pulling him away from his usual hunting grounds and towards a ridge he’d only glimpsed from afar.
As he crested the rise, a breath of wind carried a new scent, one that made the fur along his spine prickle. It was wolf, yes, but not the familiar, challenging tang of Marco’s pack. This was different, carrying an undercurrent of weariness, of a journey long undertaken. He moved with the practiced stealth of his kind, his paws barely disturbing the fallen leaves. Below, in a small, sun-dappled clearing, two wolves were resting.
One was a female, her coat the colour of dried grass, her eyes a deep, intelligent amber. She was lean, her movements fluid even in repose, and a quiet dignity radiated from her. Beside her, a larger male, his fur a darker, richer brown, lay with his head on his paws, his gaze fixed on some distant point. There was a tension in his stillness, a coiled readiness that spoke of past struggles.
