The scent of victory, sharp and clean as mountain air after a storm, hung heavy in the clearing. Marco, the swaggering wolf whose shadow had loomed for so long, was gone. Not vanquished in a brutal, bloody finale, but outmaneuvered, outsmarted, his bluster deflated like a pricked balloon. He had retreated, a snarl his only parting gift, his pack trailing behind him, their arrogance replaced by a wary, grudging respect for the small, determined group that had stood against them. Luca watched them go, a quiet satisfaction settling deep within his chest, a warmth that spread through his limbs like the first rays of dawn.
Beside him, Elara let out a soft sigh, her golden eyes reflecting the dappled sunlight filtering through the ancient oaks. "He will not be back," she murmured, her voice a gentle rumble. "Not for a long time, at least. He understands now."
Rocco, his massive frame relaxed for the first time in weeks, nudged Luca’s shoulder with his broad head. "He understands that the Apennines have a new guardian," Rocco said, his gruff voice surprisingly tender. "And that guardian has a pack that fights with more than just teeth and claws."
