The wind, a constant companion in the Apennines, carried more than just the scent of pine and damp earth these days. It carried whispers, faint at first, then growing bolder, of a wolf who walked alone, yet with a strange purpose. Luca, though he still felt the gnawing loneliness of his solitary existence, sensed this shift. He’d noticed other wolves, usually keen to avoid his scent, now lingering at the edges of his territory, their eyes following him with a mixture of caution and curiosity.

One evening, as the sun bled crimson over the jagged peaks, Luca found himself drawn to a rocky outcrop he’d often passed but never explored. It was a place where the mountains seemed to hold their breath, a pocket of stillness in the wild symphony of the Apennines. He scrambled up, his paws finding purchase on the rough stone, and then he saw them. Not the ancient markings of his lineage, not yet, but fresh tracks, faint but undeniable, leading into a narrow fissure hidden behind a curtain of wild rosemary.

Hesitantly, Luca squeezed through. The air inside was cool and still, smelling of ancient dust and something else… something wild and untamed. As his eyes adjusted to the dim light filtering from the entrance, he saw them. Not carvings this time, but a scattering of bones, bleached white by time, and a single, smooth, dark stone nestled amongst them. It pulsed with a faint, almost imperceptible warmth beneath his paw. A shiver ran down his spine, not of fear, but of recognition. This place felt… important.
