I spent the entire night tossing and turning, the weight of the locked door pressing down on me even though it was now open. It wasn’t just a door anymore; it was a portal to a part of my family I didn’t understand. The notebook, with its cryptic symbols, felt like a forgotten language I was desperately trying to decipher. And that symbol… it was everywhere. It was seared into my mind, a brand on the fabric of my everyday life. What did it mean? Who was behind it? And why was my family so determined to keep it all hidden?

The next morning, the kitchen felt heavy with unspoken words. The usual breakfast chaos was replaced by a thick, almost palpable silence. Mom was meticulously buttering toast, her movements a little too precise. Dad was staring into his coffee mug as if it held all the answers to the universe, his newspaper lying forgotten beside him. And Michel… Michel was unusually quiet, his eyes darting between me and our parents, a flicker of something unreadable in their depths. It was the kind of quiet that screamed.

I couldn’t take it anymore. The guessing, the sneaking, the constant feeling of being on the outside of my own family. I pushed my cereal bowl away, the milk sloshing precariously close to the edge. “Why are you hiding something from me?” I blurted out, my voice sounding louder than I intended in the stillness.
