I spent the entire night tossing and turning, the weight of the locked door pressing down on me even though it was now open. The next morning, the kitchen felt heavy with unspoken words. The usual breakfast chaos was replaced by a thick, almost palpable silence. Mom was meticulously buttering toast, her movements a little too precise. Dad was staring into his coffee mug as if it held all the answers to the universe, his newspaper lying forgotten beside him.
