My grand design for Daniel and Sarah was, in my humble opinion, a masterpiece of strategic social engineering. It was like a high-stakes game of chess, except the pieces were my brother, his potential soulmate, and a truly alarming amount of strategically placed coffee cups and conveniently forgotten documents. Daniel, bless his mortified heart, was the pawn I was determined to push across the board, and Sarah, the queen, waiting to be swept off her feet.

The first move was subtle, or at least, I told myself it was subtle. I’d timed it to perfection. I’d even strategically positioned myself near the window, feigning an intense interest in a particularly persistent pigeon, just so I could observe the glorious unfolding of my plan. Daniel, looking every bit the rumpled academic he was, shuffled towards the café, his shoulders hunched as if bracing for impact. Then, like a perfectly choreographed ballet, Sarah emerged from the revolving doors, her usual bright scarf a splash of colour against the grey morning.
