The air in the clearing felt thick, heavier than usual, as if the very trees were holding their breath. Each rustle of leaves, each distant birdsong, seemed amplified, a chorus of whispers I couldn't quite decipher. Mia’s presence had become a constant, a chilling draft that snaked through the otherwise welcoming warmth of the Stone pack. After the subtle jabs, the veiled threats, the insidious rumors expertly woven into the fabric of pack gossip, I’d braced myself for something more. I just hadn't anticipated it would be so… personal.

It happened near the stream, a place I’d begun to find solace. The water, usually a soothing balm, felt cold and indifferent as I knelt by its edge, rinsing the dirt from my hands after a foraging trip. The late afternoon sun cast long, distorted shadows, and it was from one of these moving shapes that Mia emerged. She moved with a predatory grace, her eyes, the color of storm clouds, fixed on me with an unnerving intensity. There was no pretense of casual encounter this time; her approach was deliberate, her intent as clear as the glint of moonlight on snow.

“Still here, Carter?” Her voice was low, a silken threat that sent a shiver down my spine. It wasn't a question; it was an accusation.
