The fire crackled in the hearth, casting dancing shadows across the rough-hewn walls of Damon’s study. It was a space that spoke of power and solitude, a sanctuary from the constant hum of pack life. Outside, the wind howled a mournful tune through the ancient pines, a stark contrast to the fragile peace that had settled between Damon and me. He sat across from me, his gaze steady, those piercing grey eyes that seemed to see right through the carefully constructed walls I’d erected around myself. A half-empty mug of what I assumed was some potent wolf-shifter brew sat beside his hand, steam curling lazily into the air.
“You’re quiet tonight, Lyla,” Damon’s voice was a low rumble, like distant thunder. It was a sound that both soothed and unsettled me, a constant reminder of the primal force that lay just beneath his carefully controlled exterior. He leaned back in his chair, his large frame filling the space with an almost palpable presence.
I offered a small, hesitant smile, trying to project a calm I didn't entirely feel. “Just… taking it all in.” The truth was, every moment felt like a precarious balancing act. One wrong word, one misplaced glance, and the carefully woven tapestry of my new life here could unravel. “This place is… vast. And the quiet is different from the city.”
