The wind, a wild, untamed thing, whipped my hair across my face, tugging at the edges of the cloak that Damon had insisted I wear. It was a practical garment, warm and sturdy, but it felt like a flimsy shield against the vastness of the world stretching out before us. We stood on the highest ridge overlooking the valley, the pack’s territory a patchwork of emerald forests and silver rivers below, bathed in the soft, rosy light of dawn. It was a new day, a new beginning, and for the first time since I’d arrived, the fear that had been a constant companion had begun to recede, replaced by a fragile, burgeoning hope.

Damon stood beside me, his presence a solid anchor in the swirling currents of my emotions. His arm was loosely around my waist, a possessive gesture that still sent a shiver of delight through me, a stark contrast to the cold dread that had once been my constant companion. His gaze, usually so sharp and assessing, was softened by the dawn, fixed on the distant horizon as if he could see not just the land, but the future itself.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through me.
