The air in the pack hall crackled, thick with a tension that had been simmering for weeks. Every wolf present, from the youngest pup to the oldest elder, felt it. It was a palpable thing, a storm gathering on the horizon, and all eyes were fixed on the raised platform where Damon stood. He looked every bit the Alpha, his broad shoulders squared, his gaze sweeping across the assembled faces with an intensity that could melt steel. But tonight, his usual commanding presence was layered with something else, something raw and vulnerable that I’d only glimpsed in stolen moments.

My own heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drummer out of sync with the hushed anticipation. I stood beside him, a stark contrast in my simple, borrowed dress, acutely aware of the whispers that slithered through the crowd like unseen tendrils. Mia Blake was somewhere in the throng, her presence a cold, sharp edge I could feel even without seeing her. I knew she was watching, waiting, her venom poised.

Damon cleared his throat, the sound amplified by the sudden silence. “We have gathered here tonight,” he began, his voice resonating through the hall, a deep rumble that always made the hairs on my arms stand on end, “to address a matter of great importance to our pack.” He paused, his eyes finding mine for a fleeting second. In them, I saw a reflection of my own fear, but also a fierce determination that steadied me.
