Chapter 10
The Near Miss
Mia orchestrates a dangerous 'accident' designed to harm Lyla. Damon intervenes just in time, his protective instincts flaring for the woman he’s growing to care for.
The air in the Blackwood Forest had a peculiar stillness to it that morning, a hushed anticipation that prickled my skin like static. It was a stillness that felt less like peace and more like a held breath, the kind that precedes a storm. I’d grown accustomed to the subtle shifts in the atmosphere since arriving in this secluded wolf-shifter community, a constant hum of awareness that kept me perpetually on edge. Today, however, the feeling was amplified, a dissonant chord vibrating deep within my bones.
I was gathering herbs at the edge of the clearing, the familiar scent of damp earth and pine needles a small comfort. My fingers, usually nimble and sure, fumbled with the delicate leaves of wolfsbane, a tremor running through them. It was the same tremor I’d felt whenever Mia Blake was near, a phantom echo of the fear she’d sown since my arrival. She’d made her disdain for me a palpable thing, a cold wind that followed me through the village, whispering insidious doubts and veiled threats.
A sudden rustle in the undergrowth to my left made me jump, my heart leaping into my throat. I spun around, my eyes scanning the dense foliage. Nothing. Just the wind playing tricks, I told myself, though the hairs on the back of my neck remained stubbornly on end. Damon. The thought of him was a sudden, unexpected warmth, a stark contrast to the icy grip of anxiety Mia’s presence always induced. He was the reason I’d sought refuge here, the Alpha whose quiet strength and observant gaze had drawn me in like a moth to a flame, despite my better judgment. He was also the reason Mia’s animosity was so fierce, a venomous jealousy directed at me for daring to occupy a space in his orbit.
