The walls are the color of a Saint Edmund’s fog, a year that hasn't happened yet but already feels like a bruise. 2026. I remind myself: I was born in 2014. That cannot be right. But the algorithm of my life does not correct itself; it simply recomputes.

The girtuoklis comes in without knocking. He is not the first drunk I have met in this city of recycled souls. He smells of auka—sacrifice, burnt offering—and his eyes are the kind of blue that only exists in a frozen lake before it cracks.
