Chapter 15
The Altar of Power
The journal leads Anya to the hidden location of the legendary artifact. It's a place steeped in ancient power, likely guarded or booby-trapped.
The final pages of the alchemist’s journal, brittle with age and smelling faintly of dried herbs and forgotten dreams, spoke of a place not found on any map, a sanctuary whispered into existence by the very elements. “Where the earth breathes fire and the sky weeps stars,” read one cryptic passage, a riddle that had gnawed at Anya’s mind for days. She traced the faded ink with a trembling finger, the weight of her impending marriage pressing down like a physical burden. Tomorrow, Prince Valerius would arrive in earnest, the wedding vows a noose tightening around her throat. But tonight, the alchemist’s legacy called, a siren song of forbidden knowledge and a desperate hope.
The journal’s last entry, penned in a more urgent script, offered a single, tangible clue: a crudely drawn symbol, a spiral within a triangle, etched onto a small, smooth stone. Anya had found it tucked between the final pages, a physical key to unlock the metaphorical door. She’d spent hours comparing it to every emblem and crest in the royal archives, her frustration mounting with each dead end. Then, during a restless midday stroll through the castle’s oldest wing, a forgotten tapestry caught her eye. It depicted a mythical scene of creation, and there, woven into the very fabric of the sky, was the symbol. Beneath it, the tapestry showed a fissure in the earth, from which rose a plume of smoke and a shower of shimmering light. A volcano. A place where the earth breathed fire and the sky wept stars.
The tapestry was a depiction of the Obsidian Peaks, a range of jagged mountains that loomed on the kingdom’s northern border, a place of myth and fear, said to be haunted by ancient spirits. No one ventured there, not even the most daring hunters. It was a perfect hiding place, a place so remote, so formidable, that it might well conceal a legendary artifact.
