The scent of drying herbs, a familiar comfort, was suddenly soured by an unsettling emptiness. Anya stood before her small, hidden workbench, her brow furrowed. The pestle lay idle, its mortar bare save for a faint, powdery residue. The moonpetal bloom, its luminescence crucial for the stabilizing agent, was gone. Not misplaced, not merely overlooked, but *gone*. A prickle of unease, cold and sharp, traced its way up her spine. This wasn’t a simple oversight; it was a deliberate act.

It was a sanctuary, a secret garden of forbidden knowledge, tucked away behind a tapestry depicting a forgotten battle. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the scattered vials, the meticulously labeled jars, and the worn pages of the alchemist’s journal. Everything was in its place, except the missing bloom.
