Chapter 10: The Truth Beneath the Desk
The group descends into a hidden chamber beneath the hill, where each character's secret agenda is accidentally revealed during a tense negotiation with the stranger over Elias's fate. A discovery in a locked drawer forces everyone to confront the fact that they have all been manipulating the system they claim to want to fix.
The staircase was narrow and steep, each step slick with something that might have been water or might have been worse. Leo kept one hand on the wall, counting steps again to keep his mind from circling back to Elias. Two hundred. Two hundred and ten. Two hundred and twenty-three.
At the bottom, the stranger pushed open another door. It swung inward with a groan that sounded like a complaint.
They stepped into a room.
