The Storm's Fury

A tempest descends, testing the flimsy boat and the siblings' resolve. Waves crash over them, threatening to swallow them whole. Keller fights to keep them afloat, Kelly clinging to him.

The sky, once a canvas of innocent blues and soft, wispy clouds, began to bleed into shades of bruised purple and angry grey. It happened so fast, the shift from placid to menacing, that it felt like a trick of the light, a phantom conjured by my own restless mind. But the wind, when it began to keen, was no phantom. It was a living, breathing beast, clawing at the sails of our meager vessel, tearing at the ropes that held us tethered to any semblance of safety.

“Keller!” Kelly’s voice was a thin thread, barely audible above the rising howl. She was huddled in the bottom of the boat, her small hands gripping the rough wood as if it were the only solid thing in a world gone mad. Her eyes, wide and dark, were fixed on mine, a silent plea for reassurance I wasn’t sure I could give.

The waves, no longer gentle swells that rocked us to sleep, began to swell into monstrous, heaving shoulders. They rose from the depths, dark and menacing, tipped with frothing white that looked like bared teeth. One crashed over the bow, a solid wall of icy water that soaked us to the bone, sending a shiver through me that had nothing to do with the cold. It swept across the deck, threatening to drag us overboard, and I instinctively threw an arm around Kelly, pulling her closer.
