Chapter 9
The Sorcerer's Lair
Following clues, the trio discovers Malakor's hidden lair. It's surprisingly mundane, filled with ancient artifacts and a surprisingly modern, terrible music collection.
The air in the abandoned industrial park tasted like rust and regret. Dr. Aris Thorne, his tweed jacket dusted with what he hoped was just ordinary grime and not, say, pterodactyl droppings, squinted at the faded sign for "Acme Anvil & Sprocket Co." "This is it?" he grumbled, kicking a loose pebble. "A monument to obsolete manufacturing? I was expecting something a bit more… eldritch. Perhaps a shimmering portal, or at least a particularly ominous gargoyle."
Rexy ‘The Roar’ Sterling, ever the professional, was already framing the shot with her hands, her impossibly shiny hair catching the weak afternoon sun. "Darling Aris, darling Nibbles," she purred, her voice a rich, velvety instrument usually reserved for endorsing luxury cat food. "This is *peak* post-apocalyptic chic. The raw, gritty texture. The inherent drama of decay. It's *everything*. Just imagine the B-roll! We'll need to find a dramatic wind machine, pronto."
Nibbles, perched on Thorne’s shoulder, twitched his whiskers. He’d been instrumental in 'finding' this place, his tiny paws having deciphered a series of cryptic symbols etched into a discarded soda can that Thorne had initially dismissed as graffiti. The symbols, when cross-referenced with Thorne's knowledge of obscure Sumerian dialects (a childhood hobby he’d never admitted to), pointed to this very location. Thorne hadn't been able to explain *how* a hamster could read Sumerian, but then again, he couldn't explain a lot of things these days. Like why a Tyrannosaurus Rex had just tried to audition for a role as a ‘menacing bystander’ in a low-budget zombie flick Thorne had been forced to watch for research.
