The air in the abandoned electronics store crackled, not with the usual static of forgotten cathode ray tubes, but with a nervous energy. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the grime-streaked windows, illuminating Dr. Aris Thorne as he rummaged through a towering pile of archaic VCRs. His brow was furrowed, not in his usual intellectual disdain, but in a focused, almost frantic, pursuit.

“Honestly, Thorne,” Rexy Sterling’s voice, amplified by her own internal microphone and probably a degree of sheer willpower, echoed through the cavernous space. She was perched precariously on a display of defunct boomboxes, her sequined jacket shimmering even in the gloom. “Are you *sure* this is the best we can do? I mean, I’ve seen better sound systems in a child’s karaoke machine. And frankly, my vocal range deserves a certain *caliber* of equipment.”

Thorne grunted, wrestling a particularly stubborn speaker cabinet from the debris. “This is *vintage*, Sterling. Authentic. Malakor’s weakness isn’t about fidelity; it’s about… auditory assault. And this, my dear reality television personality, is the auditory equivalent of a brick to the face.” He wiped a smudge of grease from his cheek with the back of his hand. “Besides, who else is going to have a working amplifier from the late seventies gathering dust?”
