Chapter 9
Ghosts in the Apparatus
During practice, the phantom airplane reappears, more vivid than before. Anya's athletic movements become a desperate dance to outrun the encroaching specter of her past.
The familiar scent of chalk and sweat filled Anya’s lungs, a comforting aroma that usually grounded her. This time, it wasn't a fleeting glimpse. It was a solid, terrifying presence, its engines a low, guttural growl that vibrated through the very floor beneath her feet. It seemed to hover, impossibly, directly over the center of the mat, a monstrous predator poised to strike.
