The air in the gymnasium hung thick with the scent of chalk dust and the metallic tang of exertion. Anya moved through her warm-up routine with a familiar, almost unconscious grace, each stretch and lunge a testament to years of dedication. But beneath the practiced fluidity, a tremor ran through her. It had been three days since the phantom airplane had ripped through her performance, three days of fragmented dreams and the gnawing unease that clung to her like damp silk.

Elena, her coach, watched from the sidelines, her sharp eyes missing nothing. Anya could feel the weight of Elena’s gaze, a silent question hanging in the air. Elena had always been a steady anchor, a beacon of calm in Anya’s often turbulent world. Today, however, Anya felt adrift, the familiar routines of training offering little solace against the disquiet that had taken root within her.

“You’re a little… elsewhere today, Anya,” Elena’s voice was gentle, devoid of accusation, but it still managed to pull Anya back from the precipice of her thoughts.
