The air in the training hall tasted of chalk dust and the metallic tang of exertion. Anya stood at the base of the towering apparatus, her heart a steady drum against her ribs. Today was different. The phantom airplane, once a terrifying specter, now felt like a whispered promise, a reminder of the unseen forces that shaped her. Elena’s words from their last session echoed in her mind: “The greatest leaps are not always in the air, Anya. Sometimes, they are within.”

She looked at her hands, calloused and strong, the same hands that had once instinctively reached out, trying to steady a falling world. The guilt, a heavy cloak she’d worn for years, felt lighter today, less suffocating. It was still there, a faint ache, but it no longer dictated her every breath. She had faced Viktor’s shadow, the fragmented memories, the gnawing uncertainty. The truth, or at least the parts she could grasp, had been a bitter pill, but it had also been a potent medicine.

Today, she would push. Not just for the routine, not for Elena’s approval, not even for the distant hope of triumph. She would push for herself. For the girl who had watched a sky ripped open and felt her own heart tear with it.
